The two community facilities that the SCC owns and maintains are part of what makes the Shepherdstown area such a unique place in which to live. But the financial commitment to maintain and improve them requires your support. Here are some of the highlights of last year’s work on these two SCC community resources:

The War Memorial Building, built in the late 1860s, requires the persistent attention of any old building. Aside from routine maintenance, in 2016 we sanded and refinished the second floor; installed a hand rail and pull on the outside steps; repaired the elevator; continued kitchen updates.

In Morgan’s Grove Park we replaced the sliding board in the children’s playground; provided a second treatment to over 70 Green Ash trees to protect them from the Emerald Ash Borer; painted and maintained the roof over the pavilion; organized work days to remove invasive plants around the park and from the town run that originates from a spring near the park; replaced two grills; installed rain barrels to collect run off from roofs.

In 2016 we sponsored three programmed dinners; hosted the Back Alley Garden Tour and Tea; mounted the October book sale; hosted a Labor Day picnic featuring the Rohrersville Band; provided children with the Halloween Haunted Hallway and the Vampire Ball for adults.
Aside from these SCC events, there are weddings, parties, art shows – not to mention the holiday craft markets – that service the broader Shepherdstown community in the War Memorial Building.

With best wishes for the New Year and looking forward to seeing you at one our 2017 events,

Howard M. Wachtel for the Shepherdstown Community Club Board of Directors
